An Oman Air Airbus A330-200 on behalf of Qatar Airways, registration A4O-DA performing flight QR-1499 from Doha (Qatar) to Kilimanjaro (Tanzania), was enroute at FL400 over Ethiopia when the aircraft encountered severe turbulence causing serious injuries to 24 passengers. The aircraft continued over Kenya and Tanzania to Kilimanjaro for a safe landing about 1-2 hours later.

Kenya's Authorities had reported at the time, that they had no knowledge of such an occurrence, and had claimed social media reports including photos were fake. The social media had reported the severe turbulence happened over Somalia (which was disproven by ADS-B data, which lost track of the aircraft over Ethiopia however).

Ethiopia's AIB rated the occurrence an accident and opened an investigation stating, that 24 passengers received serious injuries, the aircraft did not sustain any damage.
