An ANZ Air New Zealand Avions de Transport Regional ATR-72-212A, registration ZK-MVH performing flight NZ-5060 from Nelson to Auckland (New Zealand), was enroute at FL170 about 80nm south of Hamilton (New Zealand) when the smell of gas was detected on board of the aircraft prompting the crew to divert to Hamilton where the aircraft landed safely on runway 36R about 18 minutes later. There were no injuries.

The airline reported the smell of gas was detected by both cabin crew and the flight crew. The passengers disembarked normally, baggage and aircraft were assessed.

A passenger reported he smelt gas prior to departure, the departure was therefore delayed while the baggage was unloaded and maintenance looked for the source, however, they were told the source was not detectable and the smell had dissipated, hence the aircraft departed, then the smell apparently returned.

The aircraft is still on the ground in Hamilton about 22 hours after landing.
