A Blue Panorama Boeing 767-300, registration EI-CZH performing flight BV-1618 from Cayo Largo del Sur (Cuba) to Milan Malpensa (Italy) with 239 passengers, was climbing out of Cayo Largo del Sur about 10 minutes into the flight when the crew needed to shut the left hand engine (PW4060) down. The aircraft diverted to Havana (Cuba) for a safe landing about 50 minutes after departure.

Passengers reported seeing streaks of flames from the left hand engine (editorial note: which most often indicates a compressor stall or engine surge).

The airline confirmed an engine malfunction, which is suspected to have been caused by ingestion of a bird during departure, however said there was no engine fire or fire indication.

The incident aircraft has not yet returned to Europe.
