A United Boeing 787-8, registration N26906 performing flight UA-348 from Kahului,HI to Chicago O'Hare,IL (USA), was enroute at FL390 about 940nm westsouthwest of San Francisco,CA (USA) when the crew needed to shut one of the engines (GEnx) down. The aircraft drifted down to FL270 and diverted to San Francisco for a safe landing on runway 28L about 2.5 hours later.

The remainder of the flight was cancelled, the passengers were rebooked onto other flights.

A passenger reported the captain announced a misbehaving engine had been shut down and they were diverting to San Francisco.

The occurrence aircraft returned to service 4 days and 12 hours after landing in San Francisco.
