A United Boeing 787-800, registration N26906 performing flight UA-5 from London Heathrow,EN (UK) to Houston Intercontinental,TX (USA), was in the initial climb out of London's runway 27L when the aircraft received a lightning strike, three of five primary display units failed. The crew stopped the climb at 9000 feet and returned to Heathrow for a safe landing on runway 27R about one hour after departure.

The aircraft remained on the ground for about 3 hours, then departed again and reached Houston with a delay of 4 hours.

On Apr 21st 2018 the NTSB released a brief report stating that the lightning strike resulted in 3 of 5 primary display units failing. The aircraft returned to Heathrow, where a lightning strike inspection was carried out and a power reset was performed after which all display units returned to normal function. The occurrence is rated an incident and is being investigated by the NTSB.
