A Lufthansa Airbus A380-800, registration D-AIMI performing flight LH-454 from Frankfurt/Main (Germany) to San Francisco,CA (USA), crossed the Rocky Mountains about 150nm northnorthwest of San Francisco, turned straight south at 13:03L (21:03Z) towards the Pacific about 30nm west of San Francisco before turning northeast to position for an approach and landing on San Francisco's runway 19L. The crew maintained routine communication throughout approach and landing. The aircraft landed safely on runway 19L at 13:42L (21:42Z) and taxied to the gate.

Following landing the crew reported the aircraft had encountered an overspeed event during the approach as result of mountain waves. The aircraft remained on the ground in San Francisco for 51 hours and departed San Francisco as ferry flight LH-9877 to Frankfurt. The aircraft resumed service on Dec 24th about 87 hours after landing in San Francisco.

The return flight LH-455/20 was cancelled, the passengers were rebooked onto other flights.
