A Copa Airlines Boeing 737-800, registration HP-1835CMP performing flight CM-111 from Panama City (Panama) to Santiago (Chile) with 147 people on board, was on approach to Santiago, when the crew aborted the approach while descending through about 5000 feet, climbed back to 10,000 feet for about 5 minutes, then climbed to FL270 and diverted to Mendoza,MD (Argentina) for a safe landing on runway 36 at a higher than normal speed (about 170 knots over ground) due to problems with the flaps.

A replacement Boeing 737-800 registration HP-1823CMP was dispatched to Mendoza, resumed the flight and reached Santiago with a delay of about 10 hours.

The occurrence aircraft is still on the ground in Mendoza about 36 hours after landing.

Argentina's JIAAC opened an investigation into the occurrence.
