An Air Canada Boeing 737-8 MAX, registration C-GEHQ performing flight AC-752 from Toronto,ON (Canada) to Newark,NJ (USA), had landed on Newark's runway 22L and was about to taxi to the apron needing to cross runway 22R, when ATC instructed the aircraft to "Air Canada 752 at November, cross runwaaay - actually, disregard, Air Canada 752, just hold short of runway 22R". The crew read back to hold short.

A Republic Airways Embraer ERJ-175 on behalf of United, registration N733YX performing flight UA-3422 from Newark,NJ to Boston,MA (USA), was cleared for takeoff from runway 22R about 35 seconds later but another 14 seconds later tower cancelled their takeoff clearance, the Embraer rejected their takeoff.

Tower subsequently queried AC-752 whether they were holding their position, the crew replied they had first been told to hold short of runway 22R, then were cleared to cross runway 22 and again instructed to hold short of the runway, but when they read back the instruction to hold short they were already over the hold short line and stopped. Tower advised they should keep in mind for the future that being over the hold short line means they are on the runway.

AC-752 subsequently taxied to the apron, UA-4322 returned to their takeoff position and departed about 5 minutes later.
