A Safair Boeing 737-400, registration ZS-JRE performing flight FA-143 from East London to Cape Town (South Africa), was climbing out of East London's runway 29 when the crew received indication that a right hand wing slat had not retracted. The crew decided to divert to Port Elizabeth (South Africa), went around on the first approach and landed safely on the second approach about 55 minutes after departure.

A passenger reported the captain announced a problem with the right hand slats, that did not retract, and they were diverting to Port Elizabeth as they would need more fuel than planned to reach Cape Town. They would land at a reduced flaps settings. After the go around the captain announced that the indication had cleared itself, they went around to configure for a normal landing at normal speeds. The aircraft touched down safely with full landing flaps.

The airline reported the aircraft diverted due to a false cockpit indication. After maintenance checks and a reset the aircraft was able to continue to Cape Town.

The occurrence aircraft departed Port Elizabeth after about 90 minutes on the ground and reached Cape Town with a delay of about 2 hours.
