An Republic Airways Embraer ERJ-175 on behalf of American Airlines, registration N111HQ performing flight AA-4696 from Boston,MA to Washington National,DC (USA) with 76 passengers and 4 crew, was climbing out of Boston's runway 22R when the crew advised they were not sure whether they had hit a bird or not on takeoff maybe at about at 100 feet AGL, they were trying to figure it out. The crew requested to return to Boston, levelled off at 5000 feet, not exceeding 220 knots over ground, and was initially vectored for an ILS approach to runway 27. Upon second query by ATC the crew declared emergency and re-decided for runway 22L, performed an ILS approach to runway 22L and landed safely at a normal speed (130 knots over ground) about 25 minutes after departure.

The FAA reported: "AIRCRAFT SUSTAINED A BIRD STRIKE THAT PREVENTED OPERATION OF THE SLATS AND FLAPS, BOSTON, MA (BOS)", the aircraft sustained minor damage, the occurrence was rated an incident.

The occurrence aircraft returned to service about 18 hours after landing back.
