A UTAir Ukraine Avion de Transport Regional ATR-42-300, registration UR-UTF performing flight QU-102 from Moscow Vnukovo (Russia) to Lugansk (Ukraine), had just touched down in Lugansk and the crew had just selected reverse, when the aircraft veered to the right beyond the runway edge reaching a maximum lateral deviation from the runway center line of 62 meters/200 feet. The crew managed to steer the aircraft back onto paved surface and taxied to the apron. Three right hand propeller blades and the nose gear were damaged during the excursion.

Ukraine's Ministry of Transport reported in their monthly bulletin that the cause of the runway excursion was determined to be asymmetrical thrust by the engines due to different mechanical propeller angle limits. Due to the wrong setting of the mechanical stop the left propeller continued to produce forward thrust despite being commanded into beta. The wrong mechanical stop was the result of false installation.

The investigation recommended to UTAir Ukraine to examine the structure and possible failure management of the propellers especially in beta range. The operating procedures should be reviewed to identify asymmetrical thrust.
