A Swiss International Airlines Airbus A340-300, registration HB-JMA performing flight LX-288 from Zurich (Switzerland) to Johannesburg (South Africa) with 83 people on board, was climbing out of Zurich's runway 34 when the crew stopped the climb at FL120 due to problems with the flaps, that could not be fully retracted. The aircraft entered a hold while the crew worked the relevant checklists, the crew subsequently decided to return to Zurich, climbed the aircraft to FL160 to dump fuel. The aircraft subsequently positioned for an approach to runway 16, the crew indicated they would vacate the runway via taxiway E8, and the aircraft landed safely about 90 minutes after departure at a rather normal speed and taxied to the apron, the crew reported normal brakes temperatures.

The airline confirmed technical problems with the flaps prompted the return to Zurich.
