A Shanghai Airlines Boeing 737-800, registration B-5131 performing flight FM-9194 from Shenyang to Shanghai Pudong (China), landed on Pudong's runway 34R but bounced, touched down a second time at 5.37 degrees nose up, the pitch increased to 10.55 degrees 2 seconds later and the tail contacted the runway surface. About another 2 seconds later the captain instructed go around, the thrust was increased and the aircraft climbed out to safety. The aircraft landed on runway 34R without further incident about 12 minutes later.

On Apr 6th 2020 the Chinese CAAC reported the first officer, occupying the left hand seat, was pilot flying, the captain occupying the right hand seat (although not licensed as an instructor) was pilot monitoring. Following the balked landing the crew engaged the autopilot, and while the autopilot was active, swapped their seats, the captain returning into the left hand seat, the first officer into the right hand seat, both leaving their seats at the same time. In addition, the captain was required to wear far vision correction according to his medical, but did not wear his vision correction. The regulatory agency's investigation believes the first bounce was caused by not retarding the throttle levers to idle, which only occurred following the bounce. The crew lost situational awareness, attempted to land the aircraft instead of a bounce recovery maneouver which in turn caused the tail strike following the second touchdown.
