A Fedex Federal Express McDonnell Douglas MD-11 freighter, registration N576FE performing flight FX-5986 from Anchorage,AK to Memphis,TN (USA) with 2 crew, was enroute at FL350 over Canada when the crew received a "Level 1 - battery discharge alert" and worked the related checklists to troubleshoot the problem. About 220nm northeast of Great Falls,MT (USA) the crew declared emergency and decided to divert to Great Falls, where the aircraft landed safely on runway 21 about 40 minutes after leaving FL350.

The Canadian TSB reported maintenance found a defective shunt in the battery charging circuits.
