An Avianca Airbus A319-100, registration N422AV performing flight AV-8484 from Bogota to Santa Marta (Colombia) with 118 people on board, was enroute at FL380 about 190nmn south of Barranquilla (Colombia), located about 35nm westsouthwest of Santa Marta, and about 210nm south of Santa Marta when an engine (CFM56) failed prompting the crew to drift the aircraft down and shut the engine down. The aircraft continued for a safe landing on Barranquilla's runway 05 about 42 minutes after leaving FL380.

Authorities reported according to preliminary information the aircraft was descending towards Santa Marta when the crew realized a technical failure. The passengers will be taken to Santa Marta.

The occurrence aircraft is still on the ground in Barranquilla about 6 hours after landing.
