Multiple witnesses on the ground in Cape Town reported the aircraft climbed out with the landing gear remaining extended.
On Feb 12th 2020 South Africa's CAA reported they rated the occurrence a serious incident and opened an investigation. Following departure, upon gear retraction, the crew received a left main gear fault message. With the gear remaining extended the crew performed troubleshooting and communicated with dispatch and maintenance to solve the issue. Dispatch recommended to divert to Johannesburg because better maintenance facilities were available there, the crew therefore diverted to Johannesburg. Maintenance performed gear swings and found proximity sensors on the pitch trim system on the right main gear out of rig, rigged the sensors on the right hand gear (although the ECAM fault was on the left gear) and subsequently performed gear swings without any further fault. The aircraft was returned to service.
