A Caribbean Airlines Avion de Transport Regional ATR-72-600, registration 9Y-TTD performing flight BW-300 from Port of Spain (Trinidad and Tobago) to Caracas (Venezuela) with 52 people on board, had departed Port of Spain's runway 10. Another aircraft landing on runway 10 reported debris on the runway, a flat panel and a rod suspecting it might have been a gear door or the like. The runway was closed, the crew of BW-300 was notified of the debris and elected to enter a hold at FL090 to consult with company dispatch. The crew subsequently decided to return to Port of Spain without requesting assistance. About 2 minutes after the aircraft set course to return to Port of Spain the crew declared Mayday reporting they had an engine fire indication of the left hand engine, shut the engine down, operated the fire suppression and had extinguished the fire. The aircraft landed safely on runway 10 about 31 minutes after departure.

Emergency services determined an engine panel had detached from the left hand engine.

A replacement ATR-72-600 registration 9Y-TTC reached Caracas with a delay of 3:45 hours.

Maintenance determined that the outboard access panel to the left hand engine had not been properly secured and detached during the takeoff run. There is no evidence of an engine fire, the engine fire indication however activated prompting the captain to discharge a fire agent.
