An Air Canada Rouge Boeing 767-300, registration C-GEOQ performing flight RV-1566 from Vancouver,BC to Montreal,QC (Canada) with 245 passengers and 8 crew, was climbing through 7000 feet out of Vancouver when a strong odour was noticed throughout the aircraft. The crew attempted to clear the odour, however, without success and therefore stopped the climb at FL250. The flight crew declared PAN PAN, donned their oxygen masks and returned to Vancouver for a safe landing about 37 minutes after departure.

The Canadian TSB reported a shipment of Durian fruit in the forward cargo department was identified as source of the odour. The shipment was removed and the aircraft returned to service.

The occurrence aircraft returned to service after 20 hours on the ground.
