An Indigo Airbus A320-200, registration VT-IHC performing flight 6E-336 from Goa to Delhi (India) with 180 people on board, was climbing through FL210 out of Goa when the crew needed to shut the left hand engine (CFM56) down. The aircraft returned to Goa for a safe landing on runway 26 about 35 minutes after departure.

A replacement A320-200 registration VT-IHA reached Delhi with a delay of about 3 hours.

Goa's Environment Minister was passenger on the flight and reported the left hand engine was on fire, the crew shut the engine down and returned to Goa.

The airline denied there was a fire and confirmed the engine failed. The cause of the engine failure is under investigation.
