An Air Canada Boeing 777-300, registration C-FIVW performing flight AC-8 from Hong Kong (China) to Vancouver,BC (Canada) with 442 passengers and 17 crew, was departing Hong Kong's runway 07R when the crew heard a popping sound and observed an brief EGT exceedance indication on the right hand engine (GE90). The aircraft continued the climb and was enroute at FL310 about 510nm eastnortheast of Hong Kong, northeast of the nortern tip of Taiwan, when the crew decided to return to Hong Kong. The aircraft descended to FL300 for the return and landed safely back on Hong Kong's runway 07L about 3:20 hours after departure.

The Canadian TSB reported tower advised the crew that debris was found on the departure runway. The crew consulted with maintnance then decided to return. The aircraft sustained minor damage, a maintenance investigation is under way.

The occurrence aircraft departed Hong Kong on Aug 4th to Toronto,ON (Canada).
