A passenger reported immediately after becoming airborne an unusual loud noise was heard from the right hand side. The aircraft remained low, about 15 minutes after departure it became obvious they were returning to Amsterdam. The captain subsequently announced that the right hand engine had frequently overheated and was shut down. After landing the captain opened the cockpit door and talked to passengers indicating that the situation had been more critical than just the right hand engine overheating, he never had experienced such an emergency before.
A replacement Boeing 737-800 registration PH-BXM reached Ibiza with a delay of about 3 hours.
The occurrence aircraft returned to service the following morning after about 18 hours on the ground.
