An Expressjet Canadair CRJ-200 on behalf of Delta Airlines, registration N979EV performing flight XE-5221/DL-5221 from Detroit,MI to Asheville,NC (USA) with 39 passengers and 3 crew, was on a visual approach to Asheville having joined the right downwind for runway 34 (length 8000 feet/2440 meters) when the crew reported they needed to abort the approach reporting they had a flaps problem forcing them to land at a higher than normal speed, they were currently talking to their dispatch. The crew subsequenty decided to divert to Greenville Spartanburg,SC because of the longer runway (length 11000 feet/3350 meters) available there. The aircraft landed safely on Greenville Spartanburg's runway 04 at a higher speed than normal about 20 minutes after aborting the approach to Asheville.
