An Air France Airbus A380-800, registration F-HPJC performing flight AF-703 (dep Mar 9th) from Abidjan (Cote Ivoire) to Paris Charles de Gaulle (France) with 501 people on board, was enroute at FL350 about 280nm north of Abidjan when one of the left hand engines (GP7270) emitted a loud bang and streaks of flames prompting the crew to shut the engine down. The aircraft drifted down to FL320 and returned to Abidjan for a safe landing about 100 minutes after departure.

The airline reported one of the engines surged, a known failure condition, which could also be caused by a bird strike on departure. The passengers were rebooked onto the flight the following day.

The occurrence aircraft is still on the ground in Abidjan about 44 hours after landing back.
