An Eva Air Boeing 777-300, registration B-16736 performing flight BR-27 from San Francisco,CA (USA) to Taipei (Taiwan) with 187 people on board, was in the initial climb out of San Francisco's runway 28L and was about to be handed off to departure when the crew reported they had a left hand engine (GE90) failure. The crew advised they'd climb straight out, intercept Catalina radial 250 and then give ATC another call. The crew stopped the climb at 6000 feet and subsequently declared Mayday. The crew worked the related checklists, shut the engine down and dumped fuel. The aircraft landed safely back on San Francisco's runway 28L about 50 minutes after departure.

A passenger reported upon takeoff a large bang was heard and a bright flash was seen. A burning smell developed in the cabin. The aircraft climbed out shallower than normal and stopped the climb, the captain announced they had received a bird strike on takeoff, a large bird, they were returning to San Francisco.
