A Southwest Airlines Boeing 737-800, registration N8509U performing flight WN-1486 from Pittsburgh,PA to Fort Myers,FL (USA), was in the initial climb out of Pittsburgh's runway 28R when the aircraft flew through a flock of geese and suffered a number of bird strikes. The crew stopped the climb at about 8500 feet and returned to Pittsburgh for a safe landing on runway 28L about 25 minutes after departure.

A post flight inspection revealed a large hole in the right hand horizontal stabilizer with a goose hanging down.

The FAA reported the unknown aircraft sustained unknown damage when it struck a bird at an unknown phase of flight, it was unknown whether there were any injuries.

A replacement Boeing 737-800 registration N8678E reached Fort Myers with a delay of 4 hours.
