A Vietnam Airlines Airbus A321-200, registration VN-A336 performing flight VN-1544 from Hue to Hanoi (Vietnam), landed on Hanoi's runway 11L at 20:48L (13:48Z) but temporarily went off the runway and returned onto the runway. The aircraft taxied to the terminal without further incident, the passengers disembarked normally.

The airline reported the aircraft landed in adverse weather conditions and temporarily went off the runway, the aircraft taxied to the apron normally. There were no injuries, the aircraft sustained substantial damage however.

The occurrence aircraft was still on the ground in Hanoi about 25 hours after landing.

On Sep 6th 2018 The Aviation Herald received information stating that the aircraft performed an ILS approach to runway 11L and was fully stabilized. Descending through about 150 feet AGL rain began and intensified, the wind screen wipers were activated at maximum speed. During the flare, about 3 seconds prior to touchdown the winds changed from a head wind to a right cross wind and increased in intensity to 22 knots from the right, at the same time the rain became heavy and visual contact with the runway was lost. The aircraft drifted left off the runway with the left main gear rolling through grass. The crew steered the aircraft back to the runway center line and taxied to the apron. Maintenance noticed dirt and grass on the landing gear. The left main gear collided with at least one runway edge light. There is no evidence of substantial damage, the aircraft needed a replacement tyre and some extensive wash (thus the AVH downgraded the occurrence from accident, based on the initial airline's report of substantial damage, to incident).
