A Lufthansa McDonnell Douglas MD-11 freighter, registration D-ALCB performing flight GEC-8369 from Mumbai (India) to Frankfurt/Main (Germany) with 3 crew, was enroute at FL340 over the Iran when the senior first officer became ill and was unable to continue duties. The other two crew continued the flight but subsequently decided to divert to Vienna (Austria), where the aircraft landed safely about 4.5 hours later.

The aircraft remained on the ground in Vienna for about 3.5 hours, then continued to Frankfurt.

On May 8th 2018 Germany's BFU reported in their January Bulletin that the senior first officer was unable to continue duties due to food poisoning. The crew subsequently decided to divert to Vienna. The BFU opened an investigation into the occurrence rated a serious incident.
