A Swiss International Airlines Airbus A340-300, registration HB-JMC performing flight LX-289 from Johannesburg (South Africa) to Zurich (Switzerland) with 231 people on board, was in the initial climb out of Johannesburg's runway 21R when the crew declared PAN PAN, PAN PAN, PAN PAN reporting they had problems with the landing gear. The aircraft levelled off at FL120 advising they were not a in hurry to return to the field, they needed to dump fuel for about one hour. They did have a green hydraulic leak earlier (before departure), which seemed to be fixed, however, they could not retract their landing gear, they were not losing hydraulic fluid anymore but something was still wrong with the hydraulic system. The crew requested a tow truck to be present on arrival, they wouldn't be able to vacate the runway on their own and needed to be towed. The aircraft dumped fuel and returned to Johannesburg for a safe landing on runway 21R about 80 minutes after departure. The aircraft stopped on the runway for about 30 minutes and was towed to the apron.

About 2:20 hours prior to becoming airborne the aircraft had taxied out on taxiway A towards runway 03L when the aircraft stopped short of the intersection with taxiway B due to hydraulic fluid spilling from the green hydraulic system resulting in low quantity and low pressure indications for the system. The aircraft turned onto taxiway B and returned to the apron.
