A Hawaiian Airbus A330-200, registration N378HA performing flight HA-48 from Honolulu,HI to Oakland,CA (USA) with 290 people on board, was on approach to Oakland's runway 30 maintaining 3000 feet when the crew advised they had a flaps problem. The aircraft climbed back to 5000 feet and entered a hold for about 45 minutes while the crew worked the related checklists. The crew subsequently declared Mayday advising they were going to land fast and needed emergency services to check the brakes and wheels after landing. The aircraft positioned for another approach to runway 12 for a safe landing at a higher than normal speed (178 knots over ground). The aircraft stopped briefly on the runway for checks of the brakes and wheels by emergency services, then continued to taxi to the apron.

The occurrence aircraft returned to service about 21 hours after landing.
