A Lufthansa Airbus A380-800, registration D-AIMB performing flight LH-455 from San Francisco,CA (USA) to Frankfurt/Main (Germany), was enroute at FL350 about 300nm northeast of San Francisco when the crew decided to return to San Francisco due to an elderly male passenger travelling with his wife suffering cardiac problems. Two flight attendants and two doctors on board provided first aid, the doctors decided the patient could not be moved and began treatment on the spot, a defibrillator was connected but didn't need to shock, the patient became unconscious a number of times following circulatory failure with the doctors manually resuscitating the patient. In the meantime, on the way back, the aircraft dumped about 40 tons of fuel and landed safely but overweight back on San Francisco's runway 28L about 50 minutes after turning around. The patient was taken to a hospital and was stabilized.

The aircraft departed San Francisco after about 4.5 hours on the ground with about 20 passengers less, who decided to not continue their journey after return to San Francisco, and without a flight attendant, who collapsed after landing back in San Francisco and was taken to a hospital, too, but was able to leave the hospital already. The aircraft reached Frankfurt with a delay of 3:40 hours.
