A Porter Airlines de Havilland Dash 8-400, registration C-GLQN performing flight PD-127 from Toronto Billy Bishop,ON (Canada) to Newark,NJ (USA) with 77 passengers and 4 crew, was climbing out of Toronto's City Airport when the crew noticed the fluctuation of the #1 engine (left hand PW150) oil pressure, worked the related checklists and decided to return to Billy Bishop Airport. During the descent the engine oil pressure dropped into the red zone of the gauge prompting the crew to shut the engine down and divert to Toronto's International Airport, where the aircraft landed safely on runway 24R.

The Canadian TSB reported the flight crew inspected their aircraft and found evidence of a substantial engine oil leak. Maintenance discovered the oil cap was missing. The back up check valve, that should have prevented the oil leak even if the oil cap was missing, also failed causing the engine oil to deplete.
