A United Airbus A320-200, registration N427UA performing flight UA-809 from Santa Ana,CA to Denver,CO (USA), departed Santa Ana's runway 20R at 16:01L (00:01Z Dec 30th) and completed a seemingly uneventful flight with a safe landing in Denver.

A car was driven along Park Avenue near Diamond Avenue on Balboa Island at about 16:00L when a part dropped out of the air and left a gash in the car's bonnet.

The FAA reported the part was identified to be a fuel cap from an A320. The FAA approached United operating that A320.

The airline reported they are investigating the occurrence internally.
