Batik B738 enroute on Oct 24th 2017, clear air turbulence injures three

A Batik Air Boeing 737-800, registration PK-LBY performing flight ID-6890 from Jakarta to Medan Kuala Namu (Indonesia) with 114 passengers and 7 crew, was enroute at FL360 in skies clear of cloud when the aircraft unexpectedly encountered severe turbulence causing a passenger and a flight attendant to receive serious injuries (fractures). The aircraft continued to Medan for a safe landing about 2:15 hours after departure. The injured were taken to a hospital.

Lion Air, parent company, reported the aircraft encountered clear air turbulence, no clouds were present at all. A flight attendant received a fractured leg, a passenger a spine fracture.

On Jan 2nd 2018 Indonesia's NTSC released their preliminary report stating the aircraft was deviating around weather on the descent through about FL245 towards Medan, when the aircraft encountered turbulence for about 20 seconds experiencing vertical accelerations between -0.482G and +2.334G. Following the turbulence encounter a flight attendant found a passenger injured in the aft lavatory and a collegue injured in the aft galley. No medics were on board. The aircraft continued for a safe landing in Medan. The injured flight attendant sustained serious injuries (fracture of left leg), the passenger received a serious injury too (Cervical disc disorder with myelopathy and fracture on cervical vertebra). Another flight attendant reported minor injuries /(bruises on forehead and wounds on hands).

The aircraft sustained damage to the cabin ceiling and received a number of damaged passenger service units.

The NTSC reported: "The satellite images were provided by Badan Meteorologi Klimatologi dan Geofisika (BMKG) indicated that at surrounding area including the accident site (red square) at 0900 UTC, 1000 UTC and 1100 UTC was cloudy with development of cumulonimbus and high clouds."
