A Taftan Airlines McDonnell Douglas MD-82 on behalf of Taban Air, registration EP-CBA performing flight HH-6329 from Mashad to Tehran Mehrabad (Iran), was in the initial climb out of Mashad when the crew reported a problem with the left hand engine (JT8D) and returned to Mashad for a safe landing about 15 minutes after departure.

The airline reported the aircraft returned to Mashad minutes after departure due to a technical defect. The aircraft was able to depart again about 3 housr later.

Iran's CAO (Civil Aviation Authority) reported that the crew received a left hand engine fire indication. The indication was identified erroneous due to an error in one of the fire loops. The fire loop was disabled according to minimum equipment list requirements and the aircraft was returned to service. The investigation focusses on maintenance issues as cause of the error in the fire loop. The engine had been installed on the aircraft in March 2017 following a turbine blade failure during the start of the previous engine, a maintenance check of that engine however did not detect the fault and another engine start was attempted which resulted in substantial damage to the engine. The performance of maintenance and flight crew of March 2017 is being reviewed, too.
