An Air China Boeing 747-400, flight CA-981 from Beijing (China) to New York JFK,NY (USA), was enroute about 3 hours into the flight when the crew decided to return to Beijing after having received information about a threatening message. The aircraft landed safely back in Beijing about 7 hours after departure.

A replacement Boeing 747-400 registration B-2447 is now estimated to depart Beijing with a delay of about 11 hours.

The airline confirmed without providing further details that the aircraft returned to Beijing after a threatening message was received.

Passengers reported on Weibo they still do not know why the aircraft returned, they were assuming a robbery and the robbers on the aircraft. Security forces were surrounding the aircraft after arrival.
