An Alitalia Airbus A320-200, registration EI-DSL performing flight AZ-1531 from Cagliari to Milan Linate (Italy) with 167 passengers and 6 crew, was in the initial climb out of Cagliari's runway 14 when the right hand engine (CFM56) emitted a loud bang and failed. The crew stopped the climb at 5000 feet, shut the engine down and returned to Cagliari for a safe landing on runway 14 about 30 minutes after departure.

A replacement A320-200 registration EI-EIB reached Milan with a delay of 4 hours.
