An Easyjet Airbus A320-200, registration G-EZTK performing flight U2-5454 from Paphos (Cyprus) to London Gatwick,EN (UK) with 169 passengers and 6 crew, was enroute at FL340 about 150nm east of Athens (Greece) when the crew became aware of a whirring noise from below the cockpit and forward galley soon followed by an electrical burning odour. The crew discussed the situation with the senior flight attendant then decided to divert. Both crew donned their oxygen masks, declared PAN and diverted the aircraft to Athens for a safe landing.

The United Kingdom's AAIB released their bulletin reporting that an avionics cooling extractor fan had seized as result of ceramic bearing failure. The component was replaced and the aircraft returned to service.

The AAIB reported the extractor fan had accumulated 25,181 hours since new and 14,181 flight cycles since new, while the paired blower fan had been replaced in 2016. Due to the change of the blower fan the fan pair was not assigned priority to, therefore the extractor fan remained in service despite its high service time.
