A Virgin Atlantic Boeing 787-900, registration G-VYUM performing flight VS-7 from London Heathrow,EN (UK) to Los Angeles,CA (USA), was enroute at FL400 about 390nm northeast of Los Angeles when the crew reported an engine (Trent 1000) oil leak, the aircraft drifted down to FL240 while continuing to Los Angeles. Fire fighters at Los Angeles were told while taking their stand by positions for the arrival of the aircraft that the aircraft had shut an engine down due to an engine oil leak. The aircraft landed safely on Los Angeles' runway 25L about 75 minutes after leaving FL400.

The occurrence aircraft remained on the ground for about 26 hours, then departed for the return flight VS-8A.
