Trans State E145 at Saint Louis on Feb 23rd 2016, both wing tips strike on landing

A Trans State Airlines Embraer ERJ-145 on behalf of United, registration N856HK performing flight AX-4615/UA-4615 from Chicago O'Hare,IL to Saint Louis,MO (USA) with 33 people on board, was on approach to Saint Louis' runway 30R when the aircraft went around after runway contact advising tower that no assistance was needed and they just wanted to remain in the traffic pattern for another approach. The aircraft was cleared for a left hand pattern to runway 30L and landed safely on runway 30L.

The FAA reported the aircraft received minor damage when it struck the wing tips (plural!) onto the runway surface.

The occurrence aircraft was still on the ground 11 hours after landing.

On Nov 30th 2017 the NTSB reported they rated the occurrence an accident, an investigation has been opened though investigators are not going to travel in support of the investigation and refer to data from various entities like the FAA. The aircraft encountered strong gusting cross winds during its first approach to Saint Louis and initiated a go around, performed a second approach and landed without further incident. Following the landing substantial damage was found to both wing tips.
