An Allegiant McDonnell Douglas MD-83, registration N865GA performing flight G4-736 from Orlando Sanford,FL to Bangor,ME (USA) with 120 people on board, was enroute at FL330 about 110nm southwest of Providence,RI (USA) when the crew reported the smell of smoke on board. The aircraft diverted to Providence. On final approach the crew reported the flight attendants reported hot panels in the back, they wanted to make sure emergency services were meeting them. The aircraft landed safely on runway 05 about 25 minutes after leaving FL330, after landing the crew reported they had some heat and damage in the rear of the aircraft advising they would continue to taxi to the apron requesting emergency services to follow them but might need to evacuate any moment if open flames or smoke occurred. The aircraft made it to the terminal, where the passengers deplaned rapidly.

The airline reported the passengers were taken to hotels, the flight will be continued to Bangor the following morning.
