An Iberia Airbus A340-600, registraton EC-IZY performing flight IB-6585 from Madrid,SP (Spain) to Bogota (Colombia), was enroute at FL380 about 1000nm southwest of Madrid and about 700nm off the coast of Lisbon (Portugal) when the crew decided to return to Madrid. The aircraft descended to FL350, entered a hold near Madrid to dump fuel and landed on Madrid's runway 32L at a higher than normal speed (about 188 knots over ground) about 3:20 hours after the decision to return.

The airline reported a mechanical failure prompted the return to Madrid's Barajas Airport because spare parts, equipment, hangars and maintenance personnel are available in Madrid.
