An Iceland Air Boeing 757-200, registration TF-FIR performing inaugural flight FI-828 from Philadelphia,PA (USA) to Keflavik (Iceland), was enroute at FL360 about 110nm northeast of Boston,MA (USA) when the crew decided to divert to Boston due to a strong smell of rubber in the aft cabin. The aircraft landed safely on Boston's runway 27 about 25 minutes later.

A passenger seated in the aft cabin reported there had been a weird smell already when they embarked the aircraft, however, they thought the odour came from the toilet. It intensified in flight.

The airline reported the captain decided to have the aircraft checked due to an unusual odour of rubber in the aft cabin. The passengers were taken to hotels while the aircraft was being examined.

The occurrence aircraft is still on the ground 15.5 hours after landing.
