A Mount Cook Airlines Avions de Transport Regional ATR-72-212A on behalf of ANZ Air New Zealand, registration ZK-MVO performing flight NZ-5184 from Christchurch to Palmerston North (New Zealand) with 56 people on board, was climbing out of Christchurch when the crew stopped the climb at FL150 but continued towards Palmerston for about 10 minutes before the crew decided to return to Christchurch. The aircraft descended to FL120 for the return and landed safely in Christchurch about 30 minutes after the decision to turn aorund.

A replacement ATR-72-212A registration ZK-MVL reached Palmerston North with a delay of 4:15 hours.

The airline reported the aircraft returned due to an engineering issue.

The occurrence aircraft resumed service about 4 hours after landing back.
