A THY Turkish Airlines Boeing 737-900, registration TC-JYB performing flight TK-537 from Istanbul (Turkey) to Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso), was climbing out of Istanbul when the aircraft received a lightning strike. In the absence of abnormal indications the aircraft continued the flight and was enroute at FL340 about 60nm east of Thessaloniki (Greece) when the crew decided to return to Istanbul. The aircraft climbed to FL350 first, then descended to FL240 for the return and landed safely back in Istanbul about 2.5 hours after departure.

A replacement Boeing 737-900 registration TC-JYF reached Ouagadougou with a delay of 5 hours.

The occurrence aircraft returned to service after 22 hours on the ground.
