A Lufthansa Boeing 747-400, registration D-ABVT performing flight LH-511D (scheduled dep Mar 16th, actual dep Mar 17th) from Buenos Aires,BA (Argentina) to Frankfurt/Main (Germany), was enroute at FL400 about 90nm southwest of Lyon (France) when the crew changed the destination to Milan Malpensa (Italy). The aircraft continued to Milan maintaining FL400 until top of descent and landed safely on Malpensa's runway 35R about 40 minutes later.

A passenger reported that breakfast service was just about to commence near Lyon (France) when the captain announced they were diverting to Milan Malpensa due to the weather conditions in Germany north of the Alps with icing conditions down to 1500 meters/5000 feet, which have been confirmed by a number of other pilots, too. A defect of the de-icing systems, that had been repaired in Buenos Aires, had re-surfaced preventing the aircraft from entering icing conditions. The passengers were rebooked onto other narrowbody flights, an additional A321 was dispatched to Milan to take the passengers to Frankfurt.

A replacement Airbus A321-200 registration D-AIDM was dispatched from Frankfurt to Milan Malpensa and reached Frankfurt with a total delay of 27.5 hours.

The passenger reported they were told, the Boeing 747-800 originally assigned to flight LH-510 of Mar 15th 2017 had not been able to depart Frankfurt, a replacement Boeing 747-400 registration D-ABVT performed the flight LH-510D from Frankfurt to Buenos Aires the following day, was repaired in Buenos Aires and departed for flight LH-511D with a delay of 24 hours.
