An Austrian Airlines Boeing 777-200, registration OE-LPC performing flight OS-26 (dep Feb 5th) from Bangkok (Thailand) to Vienna (Austria) with about 250 people on board, was enroute at FL380 over the Black Sea about 210nm northeast of Istanbul (Turkey) when the crew decided to shut the left hand engine (GE90) down and divert to Istanbul for a safe landing on runway 35R about 45 minutes after leaving FL380.

A replacement Boeing 777-200 registration OE-LPD was dispatched to Istanbul and reached Vienna with a delay of 8 hours.

The airline reported the crew received a fault indication for the left hand engine, shut the engine down and diverted to Istanbul. Maintenance Engineers are checking whether the indication was faulty or whether there had been a real engine fault.
