Delta B738 near Vancouver on Dec 29th 2016, engine shut down in flight

A Delta Airlines Boeing 737-800, registration N392DA performing flight DL-2651 from Seattle,WA to Anchorage,AK (USA), was enroute at FL320 about 340nm northnorthwest of Seattle when the crew needed to shut the right hand engine (CFM56) down, drifted down and turned around to return to Seattle. Descending towards Seattle the crew decided to divert to Vancouver,BC (Canada) where the aircraft landed safely on runway 08L about 50 minutes after leaving FL320.

A replacement Boeing 737-900 registration N835DN positioned from Seattle to Vancouver, resumed the flight and reached Anchorage with a delay of 8 hours.

The occurrence aircraft was still on the ground in Vancouver 70 hours after landing. The engine was replaced.

On Jan 17th 2017 the Canadian TSB reported the flight crew observed abnormal low N1 vibrations and banging noises. The thrust lever was pulled to idle and the vibration and noise ceased. The crew drifted down and initiated a return to Seattle. After consultation with company dispatch and maintenance it was decided to divert to Vancouver for a safe overweight landing. Maintenance found metallic particles in the engine exhaust and determined the engine was seized. The engine was replaced.
