A United Airbus A320-200, registration N489UA performing flight UA-1700 from Raleigh/Durham,NC to San Francisco,CA (USA) with 145 passengers and 6 crew, was climbing out of Raleigh's runway 23R when the crew stopped the climb at 7000 feet advising they needed to talk to their maintenance for a while and would continue on present heading and 7000 feet. The crew subsequently reported they needed to return due to a gear indication and landed safely back on runway 23R about 40 minutes after departure.

A replacement Airbus A320-200 registration N468UA reached San Francisco with a delay of about 15 hours.

The occurrence aircraft was able to resume service about 17 hours after landing.
