An American Airlines McDonnell Douglas MD-82, registration N555AN performing flight AA-1129 from Dallas Ft. Worth,TX to Indianapolis,IN (USA) with 137 people on board, was enroute at FL290 about 65nm northeast of Little Rock,AR (USA) when a passenger noticed his e-cigarette overheated and emitted smoke prompting cabin crew to secure the device. Cabin crew put the malfunctioning e-cigarette into a lavatory. In the meantime the flight crew diverted the aircraft to Little Rock for a safe landing 18 minutes later. Emergency Services did not need to take action.

Officials reported the passenger used an e-cigarette in the lavatory which started a fire.

Passengers reported the e-cigarette was stored in a bag underneath a seat when it started to emit smoke. Cabin crew fetched fire extinguishers and secured the device into a lavatory discharging a number of fire extinguishers.
