Canadian North DH8A at Igloolik, Cape Dorset and Iqaluit on Nov 30th 2016, landed with 400lbs of fuel remaining

A Canadian North de Havilland Dash 8-100, registration C-GECN performing flight 5T-611 from Iqaluit,NU to Igloolik,NU (Canada) with 22 people on board, was in the initial descent towards Igloolik about 2 hours after departure when the weather deteriorated at Igloolik prompting the crew to divert to their alternate aerodrome Cape Dorset,NU (Canada). While enroute to Cape Dorset about 100nm north of the aerodrome the automated weather observation system reported deteriorating weather conditions below landing limits there, too, prompting the crew to compute their fuel remaining. The crew concluded that they were able to return to Iqaluit, about 250nm from their present position, however would land below required minimum fuel remaining, declared Mayday and proceeded back to Iqaluit where the aircraft landed about 4:15 hours after departure.

The Canadian TSB reported the aircraft landed with 400lbs of fuel remaining. The weather conditions reported at Cape Dorset were 1.75 statute miles visibility, snow and freezing drizzle and a broken ceiling at 600 feet. The TSB did not open an investigation.

NAV Canada reported the crew declared fuel mayday about 50 minutes out of Iqaluit with 70 minutes of endurance remaining, the aircraft landed in Iqaluit 49 minutes after the Mayday Call.
